I recently applied for a job at GCHQ in Cheltenham. I didn't get it, so disclosing this publicly should be safe ;-). I won't say anything here about the position, other than it involved research that was potentially very interesting to me. However, I will note a few of the points which made it such a one-sided experience.

Apologies to anyone who has tried to post a comment but not been able to. I just became aware of a problem whereby the reCAPTCHA challenges were always rejected. Everything should be working now. (Some more info regarding the problem at http://drupal.org/node/343707).

UPS Fix

We go through periods where one of the main circuit breakers in our house keeps tripping, which was the main reason I got a UPS. Unfortunately, we've been having one such period recently and 9/10 times my UPS has been shutting down about a second after the mains is cut.

I have just replaced my trusty Nokia 6300 with a HTC Wildfire. The Wildfire is no iPhone, but for the price I think it makes an excellent entry point into the smartphone world. Anyhow, there is a built-in app for transferring contact and calendar data from your old phone via bluetooth. This worked OK with the old Nokia, but I had a load of SMS messages I wouldn't mind importing.

Dangerous Car Parts

So I replaced the fuel filter on my Honda yesterday. I used an ADL blueprint part - the same as I normally fit, since they are supposedly good quality. Although next time I need one, I will see what other options are around.

When I started the car to go to work this morning, I lifted the bonnet to check the new filter wasn't leaking. Without exaggerating, it was spraying petrol everywhere! Fortunately nothing caused the escaped fuel to ignite and I shut off the engine as fast as possible.

Hacked 311 BIOS

It looks like my hacked Mini 311 BIOS has become news on Liliputing, Ubergizmo and Netbook Reports, with the latter containing a direct quote from my original post. It is too bad that MyHPMini (the site I originally posted it on) never considered it to be important news, despite doing so for lesser hacks :-S

mattday.net is born!

Having owned this domain name for longer than I can remember now, I finally have a site here! I figured it would make a handy dumping ground for various stuff of mine. The plethora of web content management systems and blogging tools available these days make for little excuse not to have an online presence (since I don't do Facebook etc). I went with the open source content management platform Drupal - it's seriously flexible and makes it easy for any techy to get a slick site set up - no knowledge of PHP/MySQL required.
